Global Entry is a program overseen by the Department of U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) that allows trusted, pre-approved travelers expedited clearance when re-entering the United States. These qualifying members can avoid long US customs and immigration lines by using quick, automated kiosks that scan their U.S. passport books and/or cards and verify their identities through fingerprints. Other benefits include TSA PreCheck, which allows frequent travelers to bypass standard security screening. U.S. citizens, lawful permanent residents and citizens of participating countries may meet Global Entry requirements. Those deemed ineligible are typically travelers who have been convicted of a criminal offense or have prior violations of immigration.

The Global Entry application can be completed online through an enrollment system after creating a Trusted Traveler Programs (TTP) account. Once the application is approved, applicants must complete a background screening and in-person interview at their nearest enrollment center. Applicants may also complete the process at Global Entry airports upon arriving into the U.S. Conditional approval for the program generally takes several weeks, but applicants can check their application statuses on their TTP accounts. Upon approval, members may re-enter the U.S. through a quick and easy process as long as they follow custom rules.

Customs Rules

Travelers must pass through the US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) whenever they wish to enter the United States after departing from a foreign country. In some cases, travelers may also need a permit or special license if they wish to transport restricted items into the country. Other Trusted Traveler Programs

TSA PreCheck and Global Entry are two popular types of trusted traveler programs available through the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), as these programs provide members with benefits such as expedited security screening, less stress and a more enjoyable traveling experience. However, SENTRI, NEXUS and FAST are other types of trusted traveler programs. While PreCheck is available under the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), the Department of U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) administers these other trusted traveler programs.
